Disproving the Single Level Conjecture

چکیده

We consider the size of monotone circuits for quadratic boolean functions, that is, disjunctions of length-2 monomials. Our motivation is that a good (linear in the number of variables) lower bound on the monotone circuit size for a certain type of quadratic function would imply a good (even exponential) lower bound on the general non-monotone circuit size. To get more insight into the structure of monotone circuits for quadratic functions, we consider the so-called single level conjecture posed explicitely around 1990. The conjecture claims that monotone single level circuits, that is, circuits which have only one level of AND gates, for quadratic functions are not much larger than arbitrary monotone circuits. In this paper we disprove the conjecture: there are quadratic functions whose monotone circuits have linear size whereas their monotone single level circuits require almost quadratic size.

Diagnosing a Failed Proof in Fault-Tolerance: A Disproving Challenge Problem

This paper proposes a challenge problem in disproving. We describe a fault-tolerant distributed protocol designed at NASA for use in a fly-by-wire system for next-generation commercial aircraft. An early design of the protocol contains a subtle bug that is highly unlikely to be caught in faultinjection testing. We describe a failed proof of the protocol’s correctness in a mechanical theorem pro...

On a Conjecture of D. Styer regarding Univalent Geometric and Annular Starlike Functions

The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, to give a direct proof for the already established result of Styer which states that a univalent geometrically starlike function f is a univalent annular starlike function if f is bounded. Second, to show that the boundedness condition of f is necessary, thus disproving a conjecture of Styer.

A counterexample to a question of Atiyah

We prove that there are examples of finitely generated groups Γ together with group ring elements Q ∈ QΓ for which the von Neumann dimension dimLΓ kerQ is irrational, so (in conjunction with other known results) disproving a conjecture of Atiyah.

Tangents of plurisubharmonic functions

Tangents of plurisubharmonic functions Local properties of plurisubharmonic functions are studied by means of the notion of tangent which describes the behavior of the function near a given point. We show that there are plurisubharmonic functions with several tangents, disproving a conjecture of Reese Harvey.

Disproof of a conjecture of Jacobsthal

For any integer n ≥ 1, let j(n) denote the Jacobsthal function, and ω(n) the number of distinct prime divisors of n. In 1962 Jacobsthal conjectured that for any integer r ≥ 1, the maximal value of j(n) when n varies over N with ω(n) = r is attained when n is the product of the first r primes. We show that this is true for r ≤ 23 and fails at r = 24, thus disproving Jacobsthal’s conjecture.
